Hang Curtains to Suit the Window and Wall

Modern living room with large windows overlooking trees

Measure the window, wall space and required stack area before selecting curtain width. Fabric needs somewhere to sit when open without blocking more daylight than intended. The hanging position should respond to the room proportions rather than a universal decorating rule.

Choose fabric and lining according to privacy, light control and care. Check how the colour looks when daylight passes through it. Consider nearby radiators and follow safety guidance for heat sources and any corded window equipment.

Confirm bracket suitability for the wall and total fabric weight. Test the desired length against furniture and floor irregularities. Well fitted curtains should operate easily and support the room mood without becoming a daily obstacle around the window.

Decide what the curtains need to do before selecting fabric. Privacy, softening daylight, reducing visual exposure at night and contributing to the room appearance are related but distinct tasks. A light decorative panel may suit one purpose without meeting another. Look at the room from outside where appropriate and consider the hours it is used. The most attractive fabric is not the right choice if it leaves the household managing the same practical window problem every evening.

Measure the whole window composition, including nearby walls, furniture and any obstructions. When curtains are open, the gathered fabric needs somewhere to sit. If the stack covers much of the glazing, the room may lose useful daylight. Ask the supplier to help assess the proposed heading and fullness for the actual space. The width of a fabric panel is not the same as the clear opening it will leave once hung and drawn back.

Choose the length according to the floor, the style and the way the room is used. A decorative pool of fabric can be inconvenient beside a busy route or where regular cleaning is difficult. A more controlled length may work better without looking severe. Check the proposed arrangement around heaters and other equipment using the relevant guidance. Practical clearances should be resolved before choosing a finish that depends on fabric falling into an unsuitable location.

View the fabric at the scale and light level that matter. A small folded swatch cannot show how a large curtain will filter daylight or how its colour looks when illuminated from behind. Ask for a larger sample if available and hold it near the window. Compare it with the sofa and floor during the day and under evening lamps. A fabric can appear warmer, darker or more transparent in the actual room than it did under shop lighting.

Confirm the track or pole specification, fixing requirements and care method with the supplier. Heavy fabric and lining can affect the necessary support, and cleaning may require more than an ordinary home wash. Follow product instructions and obtain competent fitting advice where the wall or fixing arrangement is uncertain. Keep the order details for later adjustment. Curtains work best when their proportions, operation and maintenance are designed together rather than chosen as three separate decisions.

Measure your own room and check furniture, fixing and care instructions before buying. Have heavy wall mounted items and permanent electrical changes assessed by competent professionals where the installation requires it.
